Hey you! Be an Eco-friendly Beach Bum!

Hey you! Be an Eco-friendly Beach Bum!

Earth Day is this Sunday — and that’s a big ol’ deal for us since we stand behind and promote an Earth-friendly lifestyle in every way possible, especially in ways that pertain to our Earth’s oceans and coral reefs. Taking care of our planet has never been more important, and it’s truly a collective responsibility to do so. The Earth, it’s health, ways to protect it and being an overall eco-friendly dweller should be talked about every day — not just Earth Day.

Oceans cover approximately 71% of the Earth — hello?? That’s the majority of the Earth! If we don’t make strides to keep it clean and full of life, then what are we doing? Make the decision today to be an eco-friendly Earthling, beach-goer and ocean-lover.

Don’t be a messy beach!

Clean up after a day on the beach, and do your part in not letting trash blow away. If fact, bring only reusable bottles and containers to the beach to reduce waste. And if you see litter here and there, take two tiny seconds to deliver it the trash can. There’s nothing more disheartening than a dirty beach. :(

Choose the right sunscreen; Protect the coral reefs.

It should be no secret that chemical sunscreens are harmful to our oceans and environment. They contain chemicals like oxybenzone that have directly impacted the health of coral reefs in a negative way. When coral reefs are affected, we’re all affected. What’s the solution? Switch to an all-natural, biodegradable mineral sunscreen like one of these.

Start protecting the oceans at home.

Dispose of motor oil and cooking grease the proper way. Recycle, recycle, recycle as much as you can and put trash where it belongs. Trash that isn’t disposed of correctly, can end up in storm drains and rivers and those lead to the ocean.

Stay off the dunes!

Dunes are the most important structures that help beaches from eroding and are even home to many coastal birds and species. They play a crucial role in protecting the beach and keeping it intact, as well as protecting it from strong storms and waves.

Reduce your carbon footprint in general.

The ways you can do this are endless. Try to use less energy by taking the stairs, unplugging electronics when they’re not in use and turning the lights off (and while you're at it, make sure you're using energy efficient light bulbs!) Walk or bike when you can, rather than drive. Use less disposable plastic and more reusable items.

Use eco-friendly home goods!

Going green is all the hype, and for a good reason. Switch to green, eco-friendly and all-natural skincare products and home goods like biodegradable laundry detergent and dishwashing detergent! Every little bit helps.

All in all, make sure you’re educated on factors that are compromising the health of our beaches and oceans. Understand how to be an eco-friendly traveler, and apply these eco-friendly tips to your everyday lifestyle. Spread the word about how to take care of our oceans — some people are simply unaware that the actions they take have a much bigger impact. Happy Earth Day!

Going on a vacation soon? Do your part and bring along biodegradable, mineral sunscreen!
