Snorkeling Destinations: Mexico

Snorkeling Destinations: Mexico

The first weeks of spring have me dreaming about vacation! Of white sandy beaches, of blue ocean waves and exploring to my heart’s content. Exploring underwater! Snorkeling! Swimming with sea turtles! And then I had to snap out of it and get back to work, so I decided I would write about these daydreams instead.

If I were to plan a trip to Mexico, where would I even begin to plan my snorkeling excursions? Well, I did some digging, so you don’t have to. These are some of the most amazing places in Mexico to dive in and experience the life that abounds below the surface. Take a look, dream for a minute and then start planning! Don't forget to pack your reef safe sunscreen!

CANCUN

Visit for the Underwater Museum of Cancun. MUSA consists of more than 500 life-size sculptures and is one of the largest underwater art attractions in the world. It was created to promote coral life and provide a habitat for marine life to live and flourish. So even though it’s man-made, there’s so much more marine life to see than just the sculptures.

COZUMEL

Visit the island for Palancar, located in the Cozumel National Coral Reef Marine Park. Explore caves filled with all sorts of vibrant marine life amidst crystal clear waters.

AKUMAL

In the heart of the Riviera Maya, Akumal features a well-preserved barrier reef swarming with sea turtles (a sighting is almost guaranteed), stingrays and beautiful aquatic life like you’ve never seen before. Explore the seagrass beds or venture closer to the barrier reef.

TULUM REEF

Not far from the main beach of Tulum, adventure-seekers can look forward to an off-the-beaten-path snorkeling experience. The closer snorkelers get to the barrier reef, the more types of fish and marine life they’ll see!

YAL KU LAGOON

Yal Ku Lagoon is, well, a lagoon, so it’s calmer than the open ocean. With paths and steps leading to the lagoon, Yal Ku Lagoon is a comfortable, pristine experience for those who love underwater exploring.

PLAYA DEL CARMEN

Go for Cenote El Jardin del Eden, a water hole surrounded by lush greenery that isn’t overrun with tourists. It can offer a secluded type of snorkeling experience that isn’t in the open ocean.

No snorkeling adventure is complete without reef safe sunscreen like ours! It’s safe for your skin, and safe for the oceans and marine creatures. Some eco-parks and snorkeling excursion groups even require patrons to only wear reef safe sunscreen. So amidst planning your tropical vacation, stock up on your reef safe sunscreen, here!
